Whenever I am traveling somewhere I tend to look for media created by the country I am heading (movies, books and music). Culture is not reading a tourist guide, you need some background. Can't wait to see what advances in technology (read: Wifi) will bring to the airlines' media offerings.

this is interesting, coming from the west indies in the caribbean. one airline in particular called 'Liat' is very culturally specific, with lots of Carribean media in-flight and very Caribbean oriented service. maybe this could be a model for smaller indian airlines!

Good one. No question, there was little thought into their entertainment planning. One day they will all be able to use the satellites to feed live channels rather than dead tapes. My biggest peeve is that when I go on a vacation by an airline, say two weeks, coming back the offering is exactly the same. All airlines need to have a better randomizer to change things often. Surely there is enough dead tapes out there?

I appreciate this article. As a frequent flyer and major internet media consumer I see a major disconnect between the speed of media customization "on the ground" and in-flight. It seems when I fly it's a take it or leave it strategy. Throw in cultural sensitivity and it becomes a slap in the face. Airlines definitely should be making sure that their media is being targeted to their market. It's the 2010's now, time to evolve a little...
