It still sounds like a viscious circle of to give you WiFi, you will endure "targeted ads, e mails or Google type ads". All three are interruptive to my experience and as much as you want to believe they are a good way to compensate for "lost revenue" the model is wrong.

Content marketing is not about creating portals of all your preferred messages and offers- it's about developing destination marketing engagement with contextual value. This can be accomplished without selling out with the aforementioned disruptive ads.

Airlines should consider partnering with airports and air rail providers- keeping the "always on" passenger experience alive.

Through this process, they earn the right to glean insights into interests and develop CSAT level communities. Once a trusted profile is enabled, the content is prescriptive and then the holy grail-merchandising offers can be presented.

Airlines and their airport partners can participate in the destination marketing revenue opportunities- a net growth proposition vs. simple fee based passenger fee for WiFi or IFE.

(Yes- this is something that is in Beta)

I don't plan on plugging into WiFI in flight unless airlines scrap fees or my company foots the bill. This is like working overtime with no pay. Travel is supposed to be relaxing-- I'd take a cheesy movie over e-mail any day.
